These techniques aren’t just needed for burned out parents like me, they’re for everyone who’s feeling overwhelmed.
How Stress Affects the Body
Among other things, stress can cause:
- Changes in sleep patterns
- Chest pains or tightness
- Grinding teeth
- Increased blood pressure
- Increased heart rate
- Muscle tension
- Neck pain
- Shakes or tremors
- Shallow breathing
- Stomach aches
- Weakened immune system
A Few Relaxation Techniques I Personally Love!
Relaxation is an important part of self-care. We all experience stress, and need to incorporate techniques to counter its impact on our bodies into our daily routines.
- Start with 30 minutes of walking, 3 times a week
- Tell yourself “good job”, afterwards
- Set realistic, manageable goals to keep yourself motivated
Reading can encourage positive traits, such as adaptability and resilience. While you’re navigating the halls of Hogwarts with Harry, Ron, and Hermione, your brain may be learning to navigate its own difficulties.
That’s pretty darn cool!
Sometimes, I love just “chilling out” with some colored pencils and an adult coloring book. I have a beautiful Game of Thrones themed book, with amazingly detailed pictures. Drawing is something you can do for as little or as long as you want, and continue to benefit from it.
You can also get a set of watercolors or paint. Art can be used to increase mindfulness or get in touch with your feelings.
The options are virtually endless when it comes to expressing your creativity.
Journaling Is a Relaxations Techniques I Do Daily
I recommend everyone keep a journal! As with artistic expression, the options (and the benefits) of journaling are endless. It doesn’t cost a lot of money, and it doesn’t take a lot of time.
Try to write in your journal for, at least, 5 minutes a day. This could help you clarify your thoughts. If you don’t know what to write about, perhaps:
- Three things you’re grateful for
- A source of stress
- Five of your favorite self-care activities
Meditation is an excellent self-care activity to try before bed. Many people report that it helps reduce stress, allowing for a better night’s sleep.
Spend Time in Nature
Nothing beats stepping outside on a warm day, closing your eyes, and taking a deep breath. Spending time in nature has many health and wellness benefits. It can improve your mood when you’re having a bad day. Nature walks, or other outdoor activities, such as bird watching can be relaxing and help reduce stress.
Listen to Music
There’s a reason why music is such a popular medium. It speaks to the heart of all human beings. It can motivate us, push us forward, spark happiness. Because there’s a song for every situation, music can be an outlet when you’re under a lot of stress.
Try making a playlist of your favorite songs, or songs that remind you of a positive memory, then put it on whenever you need a boost. You may want to dance, also, to add a little physical activity.
