Not to long ago, Nalakshi, the author and designer of Meraki Musings, reached out to me about doing an interview for her Inspirational Author Interview Series. That interview is now live! I pulled a few of my responses to share with you here…

Inspirational Author Interview: Questions about Schedules and Routines

What does your typical day look like, how do you structure your days?

I begin each morning with a cup of coffee or tea, have a breakfast smoothie, and do a round of social media posting. From there, what I do depends on whether it’s a “heavy” or “light” workday.

On a heavy workday, I make a to-do list and sort the items into time blocks. I usually work for a few hours at a time, taking breaks to grab food, play with my dog, take a walk, or meditate.

On light workdays, I run to the gym or just run. Go to a lake to hike, read, wander through the town, travel, garden, clean, and prepare meals for workdays. I stop for a few minutes, midday, to respond to emails, publish a blog, and connect on social media.

Before the stay-at-home order, I often went dancing in the evenings. I’ve just started offering private dance lessons and wedding choreography again, at my house.

What do your morning and evening routines look like?

My mornings vary, but I do try to be mindful that the first hour of my day sets the tone for what is to come. Getting a great night’s sleep is one of the best ways we can care for ourselves today, and ensure our ongoing wellness.

I keep a consistent bedtime schedule 90% of the time. The hour or two before I go to bed, I set aside work (and caffeine). The lights are dimmed, it’s time to unwind and relax. If I feel tight, I may foam roll, stretch, or take a hot shower. I’ll start unwinding with a cup of tea and a good book, or a cozy blanket and one of my favorite shows. Once I’m upstairs, in my bedroom, I practice deep breathing techniques and sometimes creative visualization.

Inspirational Author Interview: The Best Advice

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Slow down, take a deep breath, bring your attention to the present moment, then tackle just one task at a time.

Inspirational Author Interview: Questions about Mindset and Motivation

What, in your opinion, is the best source of inspiration for anyone who is facing challenges mentally or emotionally?

Although what is inspirational varies dramatically from person to person, some techniques work for most.

To feel inspired again, during or following stressful and challenging times, try turning inward, prioritize taking care of yourself, practice self-compassion, gratitude, and/or meditation.

Try turning outward by connecting to your social support system, join communities, volunteer, and/or connect to nature.

Bear witness to your journey through reflection, introspection, learning to be present in each moment, and journaling.

Absolutely! I believe we make our own luck through self-discipline, dedication, persistence, commitment, the ability to express ourselves, and above all through the power of a positive mindset.
